sample-less examples of things recently acquired

antony and the johnsons - i am a bird : a few great tracks of soaring possibilities but the rest drop well below the mark that the great ones set

birchville cat motel - long vanished spirals : screeching, noise-based 'ambient', not for the faint of heart and, mostly, not for me - i can't imagine a time i'd ever want to put this on

bloc party - silent alarm : so will someone please tell modern bands that slavish re-appraisal of past sounds does not add up to something inventive, no matter how dedicated the singer feels

the books - lost and safe : the 1st great dissapointment of 2005. after 2 wonderfull, joyous albums, this one sounds like they're simply doing it all over again

family fodder - monkey banana kitchen : after d.leone's use of this band in the voigt/465 review i thought i'd give it a go but as soon as that dumb-ass white boy reggae riddum starts up i shuddered

morton feldman - piano and string quartet : i fond it impossible to put a clinical gaze on his work - not that i like it so much, just that nothing ever comes to mind

the heavy blinkers - the night and i are so young : talking about slavish - this bunch have that 60s sunshine pop sound all down pat... except for the fucking melodies, guys!

jeans team - musik von oben : starts promisingly in a post-kraftwerk kinda way and then gets lost in it's own lack of focus

the residents - the commercial album : a complete hoot from go to whoa - it may just be their best

roxy music - first kiss : double cd bootleg of bbc recordings (mainly). great stuff, if just to make you realize that, live, they could be as half-assed as anyone else

scritti politti - early : did they take the title from my 5 year old vinyl compile? those last 2 tracks are definitely different to any version i own and the sound is excellent - well rounded and bass laden

status quo - xs all areas : no, i have no idea why i downloaded this. and it took me ages as well. i must admit to a willingness to love this stuff despite all it's flaws (and there are many of them)

lewis taylor - the lost album : if only he was like this all the time. ie more todd and less r&b. sometimes plodding but never less than enthused

various artists - best of moog : in one word - fab

martha wainwright - bloody mother fucking asshole : lets hope the album is as good as the best of this fairly slight ep

  • Although I've only heard it twice, Lost and Safe to me is a great album. Of their previous musics, I only know Lemon of Pink and tho I think it's pretty, it sometimes feels too quirky. But I guess that's what you find attractive in them. :-)
On the new album, I feel that they've achieved what they were aiming for before...

Can I suggest a download for you? The Milk of Human Kindness by Caribou (previously Manitoba). Surprising and (foremost) addictive.

  • what you say about the antony and the johnsons is what i suspected of the album. i like some tracks i downloaded (esp. you stand above me and hope there's someone for it's unconventiality) but i can imagine that his shtick is annoying over a complete album.

what i heard of bloc party sounded promising. or at least enjoyable. for a british band that is already quite a lot these days.

status quo really surprised me in your list. whenever i hear something of them these days i cannot withhold grinning like a cheshire cat (from the dictionary).

if i understood well of 15 albums you really like only two (ignoring the roxy music and the scritti politti recyclings), the residents album and the moog sampler. i hope you didn't have to spend cash on all 15. as a 13% hit ratio seems a little unsatisfying.

  • lost and safe - i think they re-tread too many of their previous ideas without extending them or without having the melodies that made me love them so much before

quo - i really do like some of the verse melody constructions but that insistent boogie chunk wears me down

as for hitrates - i still buy around 100 cds / year BUT because i have an excellent, free internet service i've been downloading many, many more things on top of those in recent times. even so, i have kept all these because they amount of good tracks on them outweighs any problems i have with them. i probably have another 6 cds worth that i dloaded but hated entirely.
