Some Kind Of Spark

a 26 year old photo

April Fool's Day 2005 saw another meeting of the little electronic drone combo called A Slow Rip. We played for about 3 hours in total and, to be honest, our expectations were so high after our previous recording in September 2004 that we were always going to be a little dissapointed with the results. But there were some moments of clarity and beauty nonetheless.

Things didn't sound much better after hearing the rough mix where our lack of recording preparation made for some clumsy sounding moments. I listened to it a few time and then put it to one side thinking we'd just have to do better next time.

Luckily Rob wasn't so easily put off. He fed the tracks into Acid and worked his magic to eek out the moments that worked best with editing, compiling and collapsing as special as anything Kurt Graupner ever managed.

The whole project's still in a state of flux with finer editing in progress, no final titles decided upon and, unfortunately, a PC crash delaying things further but hopefully we can get it finished before we play again early next month.

Until then here's some draft cuts from Rob's first attempt for your listening pleasure (I just know you've been waiting expectantly for this):

[titles are of my own invention]

mp3: Distant Blast Furnace

mp3: Hollow Bowl

mp3: Shelter

  • those three tracks are excellent. i especially like distant blast furnace. it reminds me of the sort of cosmic music tangerine dream used to make around zeit. evoking a captivative dark atmosphere. it gives me the feeling of standing on a deserted industrial site at night where you can hear all kinds of weird noises. i think it would be perfect as a soundtrack for a thriller. come to think of it it also makes me think of brian eno's music for films.

the other two tracks are in a similar vein. ambientish but with some extra spices in form of background sounds(like gongs) to chew on. the kind of music which would perfectly fit for the visual music festival of lanzarote (not sure if there is one this year). at that festival the music should be performed in the cave cuevas de los verdes. shelter has exactly that kind of mystical flair which must sound even better in that environment.

  • alex - thanks for the kind comments. the tangerine dream reference is quite obvious isn't it? we've assimilated that kind of sound making by asmosis rather than trying to imitate. just listening to eno's 'more music for films' as i type - i don't think we're in that calm, pristine league but thanks again.

  • It's as easy as filling out the form in the SoloAdTraffic Mailer Area to start your campaign.
